Sex in the News: Same-Sex Prom Dates Allowed

Students at Lago Vista High School are getting ready to party, and 16 year old Sherrell Ingram wants to bring her best friend, another girl to the prom, but school policy prohibits students from buying tickets for guests or dates of the same sex.
Sherrell said she was shocked when after helping to organize the May 15 prom she noticed a sign detailing the rule against same-sex prom ticket purchases. The high school junior and the girl have been best friends since the sixth grade. Sherrell said she is not a lesbian, but has gay friends and thinks the policy discriminates against them.
When Ingram's mother, Ginger White, asked the school for an explanation, a teacher told her that officials were afraid that there could be trouble at the prom if male students brought male friends who don't attend the school.
White said she told Principal Donna Larkin that the policy was discriminatory, but that Larkin refused to rescind the rule.
Sherrell and her mother immediately contacted the civil rights group People For The American Way.
